Two setts in Tapestry
Two setts can be used to alter the density of the warp and emphasize certain areas within the tapestry. There are numerous compositional possibilities that allow for a fine or coarse warp density to be juxtaposed one against the other. The combination of the two can create a subtle play of shadows across the tapestry’s surface. Two setts can also be utilized as an embellishment or accent. It has many names, ressaut or flying shuttle amongst others. Artists such as Aino Kajaniemi use this technique currently and Coptic weavers used it in the 6th century. It allows for experimentation with a variety of yarns as they sit more on the surface of the tapestry.
